HOW DO WE CREATE CHARACTER EXPRESSIONS?

On today’s DevLog we are gonna talk about facial expressions in our characters. We have talked to Patri our incredible artist to figure out how we start creating expressions.

First of all, if you want to make good facial expressions you MUST do studies. Facial muscles are hard to detect and hard to draw so whenever you can draw strange expressions and do faces in the mirror. With that, you will be able to see how facial muscles move and how they blend with the face shapes. Along with hands and feet, drawing facial expressions is one of the most difficult things you will ever find. You can mess it all up so easily drawing some age to a character that should be young.

Starting with the process itself I always keep all the layers separate. This makes it easy to modify the face whenever you want. I prefer to start with the eyes, I do it like this because in my opinion eyes are the window of the soul, you can see how someone is feeling and for me that’s the most important to draw first.

Then I go with the mouth, here you can make some “freestyle”, with that meaning you can make the upper lip bigger, show teeth or not, crinkle the contours of the mouth, etc.

After that, I always finish with some details, like make-up if it’s needed, freckles, moles, etc.

Here you can see the final result.
